The US Department of Defense announced the US$200 million additional security assistance package would be funded as part of the $6.2 billion in presidential drawdown authority re-evaluated and restored in June.

The US government has already committed more than $43.7 billion through its Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative since the beginning of the conflict in February 2022.

The assistance package includes additional air defence munitions for Patriot systems, 155mm and 105mm artillery, and 120mm tank ammunition including High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems ammunition, tube-launched optically-tracked wire-guided missiles, Javelin and other anti-armour weapons, 37 tactical vehicles, 58 water trailers, more than 12 million small arms rounds and grenades, demolitions munitions, spare parts, and mine clearing equipment.

US Army acquisition, logistics and technology assistant secretary Douglas R Bush said the US is increasing production of artillery round with the country currently producing 24,000 new artillery rounds per month and on track to produce in excess of 80,000 rounds per month over the following year.

“The US Army is committed to and will succeed at maintaining our stocks sufficient for training and readiness of the US Army, while also supporting our ally, Ukraine, with what they need, working as part of an international team to make sure that happens,” Bush said.

“That’s the result of decades of work by thousands of people to make sure our equipment is tested well and also that our industry partners produce it, critically, at a high level of quality.

“Lots of countries can produce. The United States produces the best in terms of quality. I think we are seeing that, and I think that speaks well of our industry partners.”

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said it’s important that every week, Russia sees new international activity in support of Ukraine.

“Peace has no alternative. Every country that works with us within the framework of security guarantees for Ukraine, within the framework of the peace formula, sends exactly this signal to the aggressor state. There will be peace, aggression loses,” he said during a public address on 12 August.

“It is very important that every week Russia sees new international activity in support of Ukraine and normal life.”

President Zelenskyy also welcomed Greece as the 14th country to join the G7 declaration regarding security guarantees for Ukraine, alongside Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Latvia, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Spain, and Sweden.

He also thanked Germany for the addition of two Patriot missile launchers to strengthen air defence in Ukraine, the Netherlands for mobile medical complexes, and Azerbaijan for humanitarian support and demining equipment.

“Every significant strengthening of our air defence means thousands of saved lives and a real approach to a full-fledged air shield for Ukraine,” he said.

“Every city, every village must be protected. This will become the basis of a pan-European air shield. When Russian terror loses in Ukraine, all of Europe will win.

“Thank you to everyone who works for the security of Ukraine and Ukrainians. Thank you to everyone who fights for our country.”
