98% of waste from Defence demolition project recycled

JLL and Serendia recycled 98 per cent of waste from the demolition of a three-storey brick building at HMAS Harman earlier this year.

JLL and Serendia recycled 98 per cent of waste from the demolition of a three-storey brick building at HMAS Harman earlier this year.

The project saw the contractor exceed the original goal of 80 per cent waste recycling, which is the requirement for the Green Star credit of “Responsible Construction Practices”.

The 98 per cent of waste was given to ACT Recycling, where brick and concrete from the project would be crushed and used for road base materials while metal from the project would be recycled into new metal products.

According to JLL, the company was able to achieve the feat through continued reporting, including collecting data and submitting monthly reports, which enabled the contractor to track progress and the volume of material provided to ACT Recycling.

“Over the past 12 months, we have been engaged in ongoing conversations regarding how we can improve waste diversion within the Estate Works Program,” said Kristine Dennis, ACT Defence State lead at JLL.

“This project is the culmination of these conversations, and hosting DLS and DEWPO onsite provided firsthand exposure to the unique challenges we face when it comes to waste management at our facilities, and how we’re overcoming them.”

During the works, the Directorate of Estate Works Program Office and Directorate of Living Services visited the site to understand the target and how JLL and Serendia achieved their reduction aims.

JLL is a leading commercial real estate and investment management company and currently operates in over 80 countries globally.
