NG installs first MESA sensor for RAF Wedgetail

Northrop Grumman Corporation has confirmed that it has installed the first Multi-role Electronically Scanned Array sensor on a UK’s Royal Air Force E-7 Wedgetail.

Northrop Grumman Corporation has confirmed that it has installed the first Multi-role Electronically Scanned Array sensor on a UK’s Royal Air Force E-7 Wedgetail.

It is expected that the new system will enable the Wedgetail fleet to enhance its sensing capability, extending the sensor’s rage, enhancing critical early warning, and improving air battle management functionality.

According to the company, the sensor works across weather conditions and can adapt to different missions, threats and environments with 360-degree situational awareness.

“Northrop Grumman’s in-service, combat-proven MESA system already provides mission crews with advanced Airborne Moving Target Indication (MTI) capability to support NATO assurance missions against evolving threats,” Jack Hawkins, director, MESA, Northrop Grumman said.

“This advanced MTI will enhance UK forces’ ability to simultaneously detect, track and identify airborne and maritime adversary targets at long range, while maintaining continuous surveillance of the operational area.”

Northrop Grumman has confirmed that work is currently being undertaken on the second and third aircraft.
