With major upcoming programmes to strengthen its capabilities at sea, Australia has a trusted partner in Leonardo, who is exhibiting at Pacific Expo 2019 in Sydney (stand 2P-11), displaying the AWHERO unmanned platform and a demo of the Multi-Tactical Data Link Network.

“We are happy to showcase our capabilities and products here in Sydney” said Michael Lenton, Head of Leonardo Australia “Leonardo has been working in Australia for more than 130 years and there are many programmes by the Australian Defence Forces where we can leverage on our vast experience in naval systems, surveillance capabilities and aerial platforms.”

The state-of-the-art AWHERO unmanned rotary wing aircraft is a dual-use platform able to perform missions in land and naval domains. It is the only RUAS (Rotary Unmanned Air System) in its class that leverages on the design experience and expertise of a world leading manned helicopter manufacturer.

Leonardo’s Multi-Tactical Data Link Network will facilitate the upgrade and support the Australian Defence Force’s mission critical networked systems. Key marketing activities will include the promotion of Enhanced Link 11, 16 and 22, VMF, IFF Mode 5 and JREAP with advanced Common Data Link functions on many platforms to enhance the Australian Defence Force’s operations and ensure critical systems integration and command and control within a joint or multi-national task-force.

In Australia, Leonardo has sites in Melbourne (VIC), Nowra (NSW) and Rockingham (WA). The Western Australian operation plays a key role in Leonardo's delivery as prime system integrator of the naval communication upgrade programme. The company has a team of more than 100 people working at a System Integration and Test Facility dedicated to the execution, integration and installation of the New Generation Maritime Communication Systems for the Anzac frigate fleet. The solution includes enhanced external RF communications and internal communications systems, the provision of a high-data-rate-line-of-sight bearers and the introduction of a modern communications management system.

Leonardo has been securing Australia’s waters since 1885 when it supplied torpedoes to the navies of the Colonies of Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia and continues today, through Eurotorp, to supply the RAN with torpedoes.

Thanks to a vast experience in the design and production of helicopters, Leonardo Australia currently supports a fleet of over 120 Leonardo helicopters in Australia and NZ. The Leonardo AW139 helicopter is the benchmark for search and rescue and emergency medical service operations in Australia. NSW, Queensland and Ambulance Victoria are among the many operators of the AW139.

Leonardo is also present in Australia with its space activities. Through e-GEOS and their Australian partner Geospatial Intelligence Pty Ltd, Leonardo supplies satellite-based geo-information services to AMSA (Australian Maritime Safety Authority). Satellite imagery detects oil dumping at sea and identifies the vessels involved, allowing for timely action.
