A new $18 million grants program has been launched to advance national security and intelligence research in universities across Australia.

The National Security Science and Technology Centre (NSSTC) and the Office of National Intelligence have announced the rollout of the National Intelligence and Security Discovery Research Grants (NISDRG) program.
The $18 million grants are designed to foster innovation and assist in developing national security and intelligence capacity within Australian universities, deepening the understanding of emerging science and technology, and addressing emerging security threats.
As part of the new program, national intelligence and security organisations will be encouraged to collaborate with researchers in a bid to align research objectives with priorities identified by the Australian government in relation to the Intelligence Challenges and National Security Challenges.
The NISDRG program is expected to fund around 12 research grants worth between $400,000 and $600,000 per grant, for a period of up to three years.
Grant applications will be managed by the Australian Research Council (ARC) on behalf of the Office of National Intelligence and the NSSTC.
Applications for the research grants program officially open on 27 October 2020 and will close on 16 December 2020.
