The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) notified the US Congress of the possible US$2.90 billion foreign military sale on 19 July.
The sale includes 969 AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM and up to 12 AMRAAM C8 guidance sections as well as AIM-120 Captive Air Training Missiles, telemetry kit and control section spares and containers, spare parts and support.
“This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security of the United States by improving the security of a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) ally that is an important force for political and economic stability in Europe,” the DSCA statement said.
“The proposed sale will improve Germany’s capability to meet current and future threats by ensuring they have modern, capable air-to-air munitions.
“This sale will further advance the already high level of German Air Force interoperability with US joint forces and other regional and NATO forces. Germany already has AMRAAMs in its inventory and will have no difficulty absorbing these articles and services into its armed forces.”
Raytheon Missiles & Defense will be the principal contractor and there is no requirement for additional US government or contractor representatives in Germany.
The German Bundeswehr has recently issued weapons contracts to replenish stores of 155mm artillery ammunition provided to Ukraine.
Two contracts were signed at the Federal Office for Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support in Koblenz, with Rheinmetall supplying 155mm artillery ammunition, fuses and propelling charges under the new framework contract until 2029.
