The United States State Department has approved the possible sale of F-16 Infrared Search and Track systems and related equipment to Taiwan, valued at $500 million.

The announcement comes as Taiwan, through the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States, requested to buy the systems, as well as integration and test support and equipment, aircraft and munitions support and equipment, software delivery and support, spare parts and training equipment.
The half-billion sale also includes US government and contractor engineering, and technical and logistics support services.
Lockheed Martin Corporation is the principal contractor for the sale.
The United States expects that the sale will support the modernisation of Taiwan’s military and enhance their defensive capability, while enhancing their interoperability with the United States.
