South Australians now have improved access to life-saving emergency care with the addition of a new helicopter to the state’s aeromedical fleet, with the introduction of a state-of-the-art Bell 412 helicopter.

Babcock Australasia recently delivered a Bell 412 helicopter to the SA Ambulance Service (SAAS) as part of its ongoing partnership with the State Rescue Helicopter Service (SRHS). This brings the SAAS Bell 412 fleet to three aircraft, significantly enhancing operational capacity by allowing at least two helicopters to be deployed simultaneously.
To support this expanded capability, additional pilots and engineers have been recruited. The Bell 412, equipped with twin engines, can travel at speeds of 220km/h with a range of up to 600 kilometres, making it ideal for medical transport and search-and-rescue missions.
This delivery follows the introduction of a next-generation Airbus H145 helicopter to South Australia Police (SAPOL) in July, both achieved through close collaboration with SRHS to meet operational requirements and timelines. The new Bell 412 will feature the same distinctive red, white, and green livery as the other SAAS aircraft.
Babcock Australasia CEO Andrew Cridland said, “This Bell 412 helicopter is the second of two aircraft provided by Babcock this year, as part of our $150 million contract extension with the SRHS. Its addition to the fleet will enhance aircraft availability during peak periods as well as relieve pressure on existing services.”
In addition to the aircraft delivery, Babcock is investing $1.2 million to upgrade its facilities at Adelaide Airport. The enhancements include expanding the workshop and storage areas, creating a new SAPOL office and training room, and constructing additional airside helicopter helipads to improve response times. Upgrades to aircrew amenities, such as new sleeping quarters, are also underway and expected to be completed by February 2025.
South Australian Minister for Police and Emergency Services Dan Cregan said, “Increasing first responders’ ability to get to an incident quickly and render assistance will help save lives. The additional helicopter delivered in this investment is an important boost for our emergency response capability across the state.”
SA Ambulance Service acting Chief Executive Officer Paul Lemmer expanded on these comments, adding, “With the Bell 412 joining our fleet, we are better equipped to meet the growing demand for
aeromedical services in South Australia. This boost to our operational capability will make a real difference in the lives of those who need urgent care.”
