Japan is expected to acquire US support to improve its own Hyper Velocity Gliding Projectiles capability under a US$200 million US foreign military sale.
The US State Department has approved the possible US foreign military sale and US Congress has been notified by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency on March 10.
The sale includes equipment and services, test preparation, test, and transportation support; coordination meetings in the United States and Japan.
“This proposed sale will support the foreign policy goals and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a major ally that is a force for political stability and economic progress in the Indo-Pacific region,” according to a statement made by the US DSCA.
“The proposed sale will improve Japan’s capability to meet current and future threats by providing defence for remote islands. Japan will have no difficulty absorbing this equipment and services into its armed forces.
“The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region.
“Equipment and services will be provided by the US Government. At this time, the US Government is not aware of any offset agreement proposed in connection with this potential sale. Any offset agreement will be defined in negotiations between the purchaser and the contractor.
Implementation of this proposed sale will not require the assignment of any additional US Government or contractor representatives to Japan. There will be no adverse impact on US defence readiness as a result of this proposed sale.”
