The “Transfer Patriot systems to Ukraine” petition has already garnered more than 5,200 signatures since it was opened on 1 May this year.
The petition – addressed to the Israeli government, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Minister of Defense Yoav Galant, and members of the Knesset – encourages the Israeli Defence Force withdrawing the Patriot missile system from its service in the Air Force to transfer that military equipment to Ukraine on behalf of the citizens of Israel and representatives of the Jewish community in Ukraine and around the world.
“Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, we have been witnessing daily aerial terror against Ukrainian citizens, who are being murdered in cold blood by a sabotaging Russian administration,” according to founder Anna Zharova and Israeli Friends of Ukraine.
“Iran and Russia strengthen the supply of weapons to terrorist organisations, increase cooperation in the development and use of non-conventional weapons against humanity, and help each other with the goal of destroying our countries.
“It is appropriate that we also join forces and support each other through the transfer of technologies, the development of knowledge resources, and advocacy on an international front.
“The transfer of the defence systems to Ukraine, which are out of use, can be a decisive step in dealing with the growing threat of terrorism from Russia and Iran, and to eliminate their attacks on the residents of Ukraine with a large Jewish population.
“Also, the transfer will be an important step to support democratic and free values in the world, and will allow the unification of forces on an international level and the opening of another important page in the relations between Israel and Ukraine.”
Patriot missile defence systems have been used extensively internationally, including by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The systems consist of radars, command-and-control technology and multiple types of interceptors, all working collaboratively to detect, identify and defeat tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, drones, advanced aircraft and other threats. US defence prime Raytheon has built and delivered hundreds of Patriot fire units into the global market.
