The United States government has announced the drawdown of up to US$567 million in defence articles and Department of Defense services for the benefit of Taiwan.

US President Joe Biden announced the Memorandum on the Delegation of Authority under section 506(a)(3) of the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961, on 29 September.
“By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, including section 621 of the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 (FAA), I hereby delegate to the Secretary of State the authority under section 506(a)(3) of the FAA to direct the drawdown of up to $567 million in defense articles and services of the Department of Defense, and military education and training, to provide assistance to Taiwan,” according to a statement published by US President Biden and the White House.
Earlier this month, the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency published an announcement detailing that the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States will acquire the return, repair and reshipment of classified and unclassified aircraft spare parts in a US$228 million foreign military sale.
The US Congress was notified of the possible foreign military sale by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) on 16 September.
Under the possible agreement, approved by the US Department of State, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO) has requested to acquire the return, repair, and reshipment of classified and unclassified spare parts for aircraft and related equipment.
The deal also includes US government and contractor engineering, technical, and logistics support services and other related elements of logistics and program support.
In addition, in February this year, the US State Department approved a possible US$75 million foreign military sale of tactical data link upgrades to the government of Taiwan.
The US Congress was notified of the possible sale by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) on 21 February.
That possible sale to the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office includes Taiwan Advanced Tactical Data Link System Upgrade Planning, related equipment, foreign military sales across domain solutions, high assurance devices, global positioning system receivers, communications equipment, requirements analysis, engineering, technical services, and other related elements of logistics and program support.
