Military bases and missile-manufacturing facilities in the west and south-west of Tehran have reportedly been targeted in response to Iran’s attacks against Israel since 1 October this year.
“Our pilots, last night, after successfully operating in Iran in retaliation against Iran’s ballistic missile attack that caused millions of Israelis across the country to run to shelter,” a statement published by the Israel Defense Forces said following the operations.
“The IDF will continue to stay at peak readiness and defend the people of Israel on all fronts.
“In response to months of continuous attacks from the regime in Iran against the State of Israel ... the Israel Defense Forces is conducting precise strikes on military targets in Iran.
“The regime in Iran and its proxies in the region have been relentlessly attacking Israel since October 7th – on seven fronts – including direct attacks from Iranian soil.
“Like every other sovereign country in the world, the State of Israel has the right and the duty to respond.
“Our defensive and offensive capabilities are fully mobilised. We will do whatever necessary to defend the State of Israel and the people of Israel.”
In addition, Israel Defense Forces have also reportedly conducted strikes on targets in central and southern Syria over the weekend.
US Pentagon Press Secretary Major General Pat Ryder said US Secretary of Defense Lloyd J Austin III had discussed the strikes on Iran with Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant.
“Secretary of Defense Lloyd J Austin III spoke with Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant to discuss the Israel Defense Forces’ overnight precision strikes on military targets in Iran,” he said.
“The Secretary reaffirmed – as he did in the aftermath of Iran’s brazen attack on Israel on October 1 – the United States’ ironclad commitment to Israel’s security and support for its right to defend itself.
“Secretary Austin pointed to the recent deployment of a Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery to Israel as an example of these commitments.
“The Secretary emphasised that the United States is well postured to defend US forces, facilities, and partners across the region and determined to prevent any actor from exploiting tensions or expanding the conflict in the region.
“He told the minister that Iran should not make the mistake of responding to Israel’s strikes, which should mark the end of this exchange.
“The Secretary also discussed the opportunities that now exist to use diplomacy to dial down tensions in the region, including a hostage release and ceasefire deal in Gaza and an agreement in Lebanon that allows civilians on both sides of the Blue Line to return safely to their homes.”
