The additional security assistance has been announced through the US Department of Defense under the Biden Administration's seventieth tranche of equipment to be provided from DoD inventories for Ukraine since August 2021.
The support is aimed to meet Ukraine's critical security and defence needs, through the supply of munitions for rocket systems and artillery and anti-tank weapons.
The capabilities in the package include High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems ammunition, 155mm and 105mm artillery ammunition, 60mm and 81mm mortar rounds, unmanned aerial systems, Javelin and AT-4 anti-armor systems, small arms and ammunition, demolitions equipment and munitions, spare parts, ancillary equipment, services, training, and transportation.
The package also includes chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear protective equipment; and tube-launched, optically tracked, wire-guided missiles.
"The United States will continue to work together with some 50 Allies and partners through the Ukraine Defense Contact Group and its associated Capability Coalitions to meet Ukraine's urgently needed battlefield requirements and defend against Russian aggression," according to the US Department of Defense.
In addition, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency recently released information regarding a possible foreign military sale to Ukraine, that has been approved by the US State Department.
The possible US$100 million FMS includes a blanket order sustainment of US Army supplied systems and related equipment.
The State Department has made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Ukraine of Blanket for an estimated cost of $100 million. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency delivered the required certification notifying Congress.
"This proposed sale will support the foreign policy goals and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a partner country that is a force for political stability and economic progress in Europe," according to the DSCA.
"Ukraine has an urgent need to strengthen local sustainment capabilities to maintain high operational rates for U.S.-provided vehicles and weapon systems. This sustainment support will directly contribute to battlefield effectiveness, overall operational rates, logistics, and reduction of financial burdens as a result of a more resilient and rapid repair cycle.
"The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region.
"The principal contractor(s) will be determined from approved vendors. Implementation of this proposed sale will not require the assignment of any additional US Government or contractor representatives to Ukraine.
"There will be no adverse impact on U.S. defense readiness as a result of this proposed sale."
