Under the memorandum of understanding between the two parties, veterans and their spouses will be given the opportunity for employment and mentoring with public and private asset manager Ventia.
Prospective job opportunities include project managers, vehicle mechanics, administration staff and ground keepers at Defence bases across the Territory, including Larrakeyah Barracks and RAAF Base Tindal.
The MOU forms part of the Territory government’s Operation Thrive, to increase government support to the veteran community.
John Rogers, Ventia executive general manager, observed that the veteran community provides unique skillsets into the civilian workplace.
“At Ventia, we recognise our people are at the heart of our success. Our commitment to diversity and inclusion has been repeatedly recognised, including most recently winning the Northern Territory government’s Veteran Employer of the Year Award,” he said.
“The wealth of knowledge that veterans bring to the private sector is highly valued at Ventia. We seek to employ and utilise the skills they bring to our Defence clients and team.”
The announcement forms part of the NT governments $3.1 million investment into the veteran community.
Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Brent Potter added that ensuring employment was key to the ongoing success of veteran families: “A key focus of the Lawler Labor government is assisting Defence personnel and their families to adjust to civilian life, become a valued members of the community and stay in the territory.
“Transitioning from Defence to civilian life is not easy, which is why secure employment and mentorship opportunities are so important.
“Operation Thrive was launched following the NT Defence Veterans Strategy in 2023 and today’s MOU signing is a major accomplishment supported by $2.55 million investment.”
The announcement comes just days after Ventia was awarded a firefighting services contract, valued at $564 million over six years.
The contract will include airfield and structural rescue and firefighting as well as training and incident response at designated sites, Defence has confirmed.
It will sustain 380 jobs across a range of regional locations, which Defence outlined will focus on diverse hiring, including increased female participation, disability employment pathways, an Indigenous employment program and veteran recruitment.
