The new network will operate cross all of the company’s business areas and offices, helping women to overcome the range of challenges they can experience within the defence industry.
Navantia Australia hopes the new initiative will enable women to come together to unpack prominent issues in the industry, build their networks and deliver success.
It is just one part of the company’s efforts to promote a gender equal, inclusive and diverse workplace.
Cindy Slaven, Navantia Australia’s chief business development officer and the company’s first local female senior leader, explained that Navantia Australia has doubled the number of female employees since 2021.
“At Navantia Australia, we don’t simply talk about supporting women; we work to actively promote gender equality and inclusivity in our workplace. Through initiatives complimentary to For the WIN, such as mentorship programs and professional development opportunities, Navantia Australia has worked to create a supportive space where women can excel while working within a traditionally male-dominated field,” Slaven said.
“We are also an active collaborator in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) programs aimed at encouraging young female students to undertake tertiary study and careers in these fields.”
For the WIN’s first activities have been held across the company’s locations in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Perth.
With women typically underrepresented in the defence industry, diversity champion and managing director of Navantia Australia Israel Lozano noted that the initiative will help strengthen the industry with greater inclusion.
“The creation of the For the WIN network is an important move as it sets the tone of our culture for years to come. Diversity fosters creativity, innovation, and drives better decision making, ultimately leading to a stronger sovereign shipbuilding and sustainment industry,” Lozano said.
