Managing director and CEO of ASC, Stuart Whiley, has advised the board he will step down from his role at the end of his current contract.

Managing director and CEO of ASC, Stuart Whiley, has advised the board he will step down from his role at the end of his current contract.

Bruce Carter, chair of ASC Board, has announced that Whiley has decided not to renew his contract when it expires in January 2026.

Whiley joined ASC Pty Ltd in 1989 as an engineer during the build of the Collins Class fleet. Over his 35 years at ASC, Whiley served in many engineering operational, program management and senior management roles, including as general manager submarines and chief operating officer, culminating in his appointment as managing director and CEO in 2014.

His unique career at ASC has spanned the establishment of Australia’s sovereign submarine, shipbuilding and sustainment capability, according to ASC.

In his role as managing director and CEO, Whiley has been integral to ASC’s success, including the overhaul of the Collins Class submarine sustainment program following the Coles review which delivered vastly improved submarine availability to the Royal Australian Navy.

More recently, he successfully led ASC’s efforts to attain a role in Australia’s nuclear-powered submarine program with ASC being named as the Australian government’s sovereign sustainment partner and joint build partner with BAE Systems, of the nation’s conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines, positioning ASC as a key player in a strong and exciting future in the nation’s naval shipbuilding industry.

“I have had the privilege of working with Stuart in his many senior roles at ASC over a number of years. Stuart has served ASC with the utmost integrity and has earned the respect of the board, the executive committee and ASC’s employees,” Carter said.

“His hard work and determination have resulted in the delivery of world-class submarine availability of the Collins Class fleet to the Royal Australian Navy, and the successful announcement of ASC as the nation’s sovereign nuclear-powered submarine builder and sustainer in March 2024. These achievements are a testament to Stuart’s dedication to his role and ASC under at times, difficult circumstances.

“The ASC Board recognises and thanks Stuart for his service and wishes him all the best for his future roles.”

The board has appointed executive search firm Korn Ferry to undertake the recruitment of Whiley’s replacement. Whiley remains committed to continuing to lead ASC until the company is ready to transition to a new managing director and CEO, at an appropriate time in 2025.

Whiley said he has had a fabulous career with ASC and strongly recommends that any young person contemplating their future, consider a role in shipbuilding with ASC or the future ASC/BAE Systems incorporated joint venture to build the SSN-AUKUS class of submarines at Osborne in South Australia.
