Former Australian prime minister John Howard has thrown his support behind Western Australian defence industry representative Matt Moran.

Former Australian prime minister John Howard has thrown his support behind Western Australian defence industry representative Matt Moran.

Moran, an Australian Army Afghanistan veteran, RSLWA board member and inaugural executive director of Defence West, is contesting the new federal seat of Bullwinkel in Western Australia after being preselected as the Liberal Party candidate.

Moran has previously acted as a government policy adviser for the minister of defence industry in 2016, senior adviser to the minister of Defence in 2018 and current head of strategy and government relations for Luerssen Australia.

“Matt was born and bred in Bullwinkel. I’m supporting Matt because he’s passionate about Bullwinkel and has the discipline and dedication to service that we need to see more of in Canberra,” Howard said.

“I encourage local people to support Matt Moran’s campaign, so that Bullwinkel has a representative who will listen and focus on the right priorities.

“I’m backing Matt Moran because it’s clear Labor has forgotten about WA.”

Moran is now expected to run against Nationals’ candidate for Bullwinkel, Mia Davies and the Labor Party candidate and Perth Hills shire councillor Trish Cook, who was recently endorsed by current Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

The seat covers parts of several federal electorates such as Durack, Kalamunda, Hasluck, O’Connor, and Canning. It was also named in honour of Australian Army nurse Lieutenant Colonel Vivian Bullwinkel, the sole survivor of the 1942 Bangka Island massacre.

“I am honoured to have the support of the honourable John Howard OM AC in our campaign to win Bullwinkel and build a brighter future for our community,” Moran said.

“Labor has let people in Bullwinkel down, ignored local concerns and done nothing about the worsening cost-of-living crisis.

“Our community deserves real leadership, not more excuses from a Labor Party that’s out of touch on so many important issues, like the proposed North Stoneville development, the ban on live sheep exports and neglected telecommunications infrastructure important for bushfire safety.

“As a member of the Liberal team, I’m committed to delivering for Bullwinkel and getting Australia back on track.

“I’m grateful to Mr Howard for travelling to Bullwinkel to show his support for our campaign and to meet with members of our local community.”
