Canberra-based defence company Electro Optic Systems has unveiled its latest R500 remote weapon system on the sidelines of the International Defence Exhibition & Conference (IDEX) 2025 in Abu Dhabi.
The new next-generation remote weapon system reportedly integrates artificial intelligence-driven targeting, high-elevation counter-uncrewed aerial systems capabilities, and multi-weapon adaptability to meet the demands of modern warfare.
The R500 has been designed to deliver increased lethality, superior firepower, high stowed ammunition capacity, enhanced situational awareness, and greater survivability from armoured vehicles and tactical platforms. "The modern battlefield is evolving rapidly, and armed forces need systems that keep pace with emerging threats," according to Dr Andreas Schwer, CEO of EOS.
"The R500 has been developed with direct operational insights to provide reliability, precision, and adaptability in the most challenging environments.
"Its introduction at IDEX 2025 reflects EOS’ ongoing commitment to equipping defence forces with solutions that enhance their effectiveness and survivability."
The system will have greater flexibility in integrating missiles, rockets, and other modern effectors, according to EOS.
The systems also features the STANAG Level 2 add-on armour to provide enhanced protection in high-threat environments, while a digital low-latency architecture and high-performance edge AI hardware optimise fire control and command efficiency.
The R500 features a modern user interface and is UGV-ready, integrating a new wireless control suite for seamless coordination with unmanned ground vehicles, enabling remote and autonomous operations - according to the company.
EOS has sold over 2,500 systems globally, including more than 500 in use by the Emirati Armed Forces. Its Abu Dhabi-based technology centre has served as a regional hub since 2019.
