The Royal Australian Navy’s (RAN) HMAS Parramatta has departed Fleet Base East ahead of a two-month regional presence deployment.
The frigate is set to engage in Navy-to-Navy activities alongside key international partners, following on from HMAS Arunta’s deployment in the Indo-Pacific earlier this year.
Commanding Officer of HMAS Parramatta, Commander David Murphy, said the crew had undergone intense training in preparation for the deployment.
“We know that the tempo of this deployment is going to be very high so the training we have conducted up to this point has been intense,” CMDR Murphy said.
“This includes the full gamut of readiness and evaluation training programs that our ships go through in order to prove their capability for the upcoming deployment.
“I’m confident that my ship’s company is ready for the task, and we look forward to putting our training into practice while undertaking this deployment.”
CMDR Murphy noted the importance of building interoperability with Australia’s international partners.
“Through the various upcoming engagements, we will aim to increase our interoperability with regional partners and build on the strong relationship that already exist between Australia and other like-minded nations in the region,” CMDR Murphy said.
HMAS Parramatta is scheduled to return to Fleet Base East at the end of July.
The ship’s deployment comes as the RAN participates in Exercise Kakadu – a major multinational exercise involving a host of personnel and platforms from nations across the Indo-Pacific.
Throughout the 30-year history of the exercise, participants have included the United States, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand.
The first iteration in 1993 involved four navies, 15 ships and submarines, and approximately 2,000 personnel.
