Shipbuilder Navantia, the Spanish Navy and Spanish Ministry of Defence have completed the critical design review (CDR) for the F-110 frigate, finalising the ship’s design prior to progressing onto the construction phase.

According to the company, the milestone is an important achievement for both Navantia and Spanish defence force, confirming that the design of the F-110 frigate meets the requirements specified by the Spanish government.
The design process reportedly incorporated new elements that had not been integrated into previous projects, made viable through the digital twin of the ship.
The shipbuilder hopes that the new intelligent design will support international growth, with customers expected to show interest in the new “advanced and intelligent frigate”.
Following the conclusion of the CDR, the shipbuilder can progress to the full construction phase, with the construction of the initial pilot blocks having already commenced in April. The shipbuilder further confirmed that they have already completed the purchase of the required equipment and materials to commence construction immediately.
It is expected that the project will create 9,000 direct, indirect and induced jobs over the next decade, with deliveries scheduled intermittently until 2032.
The CDR process began in December and took place over 30 technical sessions and two plenary sessions. The CDR concluded in June.
The company confirmed that the plenary sessions in Navantia’s Ferrol shipyard on the 21st and 22nd of June included representatives from the Spanish Ministry of Defence, Navy and Navantia, as well as the US Navy, Lockheed Martin, Indra, Thales, Ingeteam and Ferri.
The CDR was formally concluded with a meeting attended by representatives from the Spanish General Directorate of Armament and Material, the Headquarters of Logistics Support of the Navy and the General Staff of the Navy.
