The prime has committed to funding graduate scholarships aimed at supporting research into defence technology promised under the AUKUS agreement.

Northrop Grumman Australia has announced it would invest approximately $170,000 in three graduate education scholarships as part of its partnership with the American Australian Association (AAA) — a non-profit organisation set up to strengthen bilateral ties between Australia and the United States.
The inaugural Northrop Grumman Australia AUKUS Tech Innovation Scholarships are set to provide eligible Australian graduate level, PhD or post-doctoral candidates with over $55,000 to conduct research aimed at advancing the implementation of the AUKUS partnership.
Areas of study include machine learning, hypersonics or quantum technologies.
Scholarship recipients would be provided with an opportunity to study at an accredited educational institution in the United States.
“Northrop Grumman Australia and the AAA have partnered for nearly a decade to offer Australian students opportunities to collaborate with US research partners across a range of STEM disciplines critical to Australia’s future,” Christine Zeitz, general manager, Northrop Grumman Asia-Pacific, said.
“It is more important than ever to invest in skills and qualifications to support defence capability and technology advancement as Australian Defence Force requirements evolve.”
The AAA is set to advertise the first Northrop Grumman-funded scholarship in 2023, with the following two scholarships offered in 2024 and 2025, respectively.
The launch of the Northrop Grumman Australia AUKUS Tech Innovation Scholarships comes just days after Raytheon Australia opened the 2023 intake of its GradX program.
The program is tipped to welcome 10 undergraduates in their final year of study, with an opportunity for employment after graduation.
Gearing up for its fourth year, Raytheon Australia’s GradX participants will be sourced from an array of various disciplines and gain advanced entry into Australia’s defence market.
Core areas of interest for the program include engineering, program management, IT, finance, contracts and supply chain management and communications and marketing.
