The Center for a New American Security (CNAS) has welcomed former prime minister Morrison to their Board of Advisors after his position of Australian prime minister from 2018 to 2022, according to an announcement on 4 May.
CNAS was founded in 2007 and has shaped US defence strategy and policy over the last 15 years. The non-profit group features a defence program to address modern and future military challenges and offering recommendations for how to balance risk across time.
It provides analysis and policy recommendations on US defence strategy, force structure, operational concepts, budgets, and institutional reform.
CNAS chief executive officer Richard Fontaine said Morrison was the architect and founder of the landmark AUKUS trilateral defence agreement between Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States
“As Prime Minister, Scott Morrison spearheaded the landmark AUKUS defence agreement and led his country’s efforts to deal with an increasingly aggressive China,” he said.
“As the newest member of the CNAS Board of Advisors, his insights and expertise will strengthen the center’s research and work. We look forward to his contributions.”
Morrison’s national leadership led Australia to deliver one of the most successful COVID-19 responses of any nation in the developed world while the nation also retained a AAA credit rating, Fontaine said.
Scott Morrison held three cabinet portfolios in the Australian government serving as federal Treasurer, minister for social services, and minister for immigration and border protection. He was defeated by current-Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and the Labor Party in the 2022 Election.
He originally entered the Australian Parliament as the federal Member for Cook in 2007.
