The project’s objective is to research “procurement options” for Canada’s next-generation submarine and will leverage both organisations’ shipbuilding and sustainment capabilities to support the program and the Victoria In-Service Support Contract.
Under the partnership, Hanwha Ocean, formerly DSMR, is expected to utilise the company’s design, construction and support expertise, while Babcock will leverage its ongoing support offered to Canada’s Victoria Class submarines.
“As a world leader in submarine sustainment, this agreement enables Babcock to build on our longstanding relationship with Hanwha Ocean and combine both organisations’ extensive experience on the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project,” John Howie, chief corporate affairs officer at Babcock, explained.
According to Babcock, the recent agreement follows an earlier memorandum of understanding signed between the two companies in 2022 to enhance systems integration.
“The CPSP will play an important role in modernising the Royal Canadian Navy’s defence capabilities,” Yong Ook Lee, executive vice-president and head of naval ship business unit at Hanwha Ocean, explained.
“Our collaboration with Babcock will enable us to support the Royal Canadian Navy by delivering advanced, reliable, and highly capable submarines that meet Canada’s needs.”
