Aussie Rules match deepens Defence’s connection with First Nations community

The Australian Defence Force Australian Rules football team and sponsors and veteran and Indigenous-owned JY Australia visited the Tiwi Islands in mid-June for an exhibition match with the Tiwi Island Bombers.

The match between ADFAR and the Tiwi Island Bombers saw players celebrate their talents and engage in cross-cultural exchange, with sponsors JY Australia welcoming the effect of sport on both veteran and First Nations communities.

Throughout the visit, JY Australia executives engaged with the heritage and traditions of the local Tiwi Islands community and visited members of the Australian Defence Force in Northern Territory to help the organisation continue supporting the veteran community.

The friendly between the two teams saw the local Tiwi Island Bombers victorious over the ADFAR, 89–28. The local Tiwi Islands community turned out in numbers to watch the spectacle.

ADFAR is made up of members from all three services, though predominately comprised of members of the 1st Brigade.

Brendan Dumbrell, chief executive officer of JY Australia, described the exhibition match as an important opportunity to develop relationships in the veteran and First Nations community.

“Australia takes great pride in sponsoring the ADF Australian Rules football team and being part of this remarkable journey,” Dumbrell said.

As a veteran and Indigenous-owned company, we recognise the importance of supporting our veterans and actively engaging with Indigenous communities.

Our visit to the Tiwi Islands has reinforced our commitment to these causes and we are excited about the positive impact we can create together in the future for both veterans and First Nations peoples.”
