Northrop Grumman completes first next-gen interceptor solid rocket motor cases

Northrop Grumman has successfully manufactured the first set of solid rocket motor cases for the Missile Defense Agency’s Next-Generation Interceptor (NGI) program.

Northrop Grumman has successfully manufactured the first set of solid rocket motor cases for the Missile Defense Agency’s Next-Generation Interceptor (NGI) program.

The NGI pathfinder motors demonstrate case designs, manufacturing processes, as well as allows the teams to test and conduct integration operations, with the completed cases to be filled with inert propellent and shipped to Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, where they will be integrated into an interceptor, continuing pathfinder activities, and further proving out processes.

Once integration is complete, the interceptor will be used for additional testing and process verification.

Lisa Brown, vice-president, NGI, Northrop Grumman said, “Our experienced teams and cutting-edge solid rocket motor manufacturing technologies, backed by flight-proven processes, have enabled us to achieve several key milestones in rapid succession.

“The successful production of NGI solid rocket motor cases is a significant achievement that demonstrates our expertise and robust designs and manufacturing capabilities.

“With NGI’s mission to defend our homeland against incoming enemy threats, saving time and reducing risk is vital,” Brown added.

To support the Next Generation Interceptor (NGI) program – as the prime contractor – Northrop Grumman has strategically partnered with Raytheon Technologies and assembled an industry-wide team to provide a highly advanced capability while focused on affordability, transparency, rapid development, lean manufacturing, and a low-risk schedule.

Northrop Grumman was awarded a contract by the US Missile Defence Agency (MDA) in March 2021, for the Next Generation Interceptor program.

The contract is for the rapid development and flight test of an interceptor designed to defend the nation against the most complex long-range threats. Northrop Grumman has strategically teamed with Raytheon Missiles & Defense, a business of Raytheon Technologies, to bring together the vast experience of the two companies on one team, to deliver an effective solution for MDA on an accelerated schedule.

The NGI program is an element of the MDA’s Ground-based Midcourse Defense System (GMD) which is the primary US missile defense system used to defend the country from long-range ballistic missile attacks. Northrop Grumman and Raytheon Missiles & Defense currently provide the interceptor booster, kill vehicle, ground systems, fire control, and engagement coordination for the country’s GMD system.
