The four-year USAF contract will support continued development of Sarcos’ artificial intelligence and machine learning framework to advance its Guardian line of robotic systems, according to a public statement on 28 September.
The company will advance its software technology to benefit the Department of the Air Force by incorporating success-based learning capabilities into its robotic systems and create greater synergy between human workers and AI technology.
“This contract represents a tremendous opportunity for Sarcos as we continue to focus on and invest heavily in the development of our artificial intelligence and machine learning software technology,” according to Sarcos chief executive and interim president Laura Peterson.
“It will allow us to provide cutting-edge performance enhancements to our Guardian robotics solutions, which will benefit our US Air Force partners and commercial customers alike.”
The goal of the funding is to enable robotic systems to learn from a success-based learning approach to understand their environment, exhibit reasonable behaviour in unforeseen situations, and quickly acquire new skills from new experiences.
The project will seek to emulate how people can generalise successfully from just a single example, filling gaps of unknown scenarios by generating robust and reliable predictions.
The company will conduct Military Utility Assessments at US Air Force locations including Warner Robins Air Force Base, to test intelligent algorithms implemented on its robots throughout the duration of the contract.
“Sarcos has been a key partner for the Air Force and US military for decades,” said AFRL program manager Tony Ligouri.
“As we look to incorporate technology that can help Airmen accomplish their missions and support readiness efforts; we expect the Sarcos Guardian line of robotics solutions to be a substantial benefit to USAF operations and believe the integration of the artificial intelligence and machine learning framework into these robots will support the efforts of the Department of Defense.”
