A new company will be established in South Australia to explore the field of satellites following the signing of a letter of intent (LOI) between an SA start-up and Italy’s largest privately-owned space company.

The LOI signing at the 68th International Astronautical Congress (IAC2017) between Inovor Technologies and Italy's SITAEL, a result of last years agreement between the SA government and Italian space agency ASI (Agenzia Spaziale Italiana), will go a long way in developing the state's ability to manufacture space hardware, as well offering the opportunity to expand into the European supply chain, according to chief executive of Inovor Technologies Matthew Tetlow.
"Partnering with SITAEL is an important step for Inovor Technologies as they will not only expand our capabilities to manufacture space hardware in Adelaide, but will expand our product range to larger, more capable spacecraft," Tetlow said.
"The partnership will also open the door to European and other international markets where SITAEL have a presence."
The signing indicates a new company will be set up in South Australia looking at the fields of design and manufacture of nanosatellites, microsatellites, minisatellites and ground stations.
South Australia's Minister for Defence and Space Industries Martin Hamilton-Smith said the state's collaboration with international leaders is a key part of its space strategy as it looks to grow its local economy.
“International collaboration is a key component of our space strategy and it is fantastic that we have been able to form some exciting new partnerships at IAC2017," said Minister Hamilton-Smith.
"Local companies have signed agreements with some key players in the global space market, which is an indication of the level of talent we have in South Australia.
“The South Australian Government is committed to fostering these partnerships and identifying new opportunities to grow the space economy. This will be a key role of our new South Australian Space Industry Centre."
