Training revolution: Army, Navy leverage national technical trades training

The Australian Army and Royal Australian Navy have leveraged the growing national network of industry, government, and university-supported technical trade providers to launch the joint technical trades training system.

The Australian Army and Royal Australian Navy have leveraged the growing national network of industry, government, and university-supported technical trade providers to launch the joint technical trades training system.

Described as a “revolutionising” trades training capability, the joint technical trades training system (JTTTS) will enhance the way both Army and Navy personnel develop critical technical skills and apply them in the field by delivering industry-recognised qualifications.

Army commenced their training on 1 January, with both Navy and Army signing a contract for the system with Wodonga Institute of TAFE (WIOT) last year, supported by their National Technical Education Network (NTEN) partners.

Lieutenant Colonel Tim Soper, Commanding Officer Army School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, explained that the JTTTS would expand training opportunities in home regions and locations, enabling Defence’s training system to meet rapidly changing capability requirements.

“The JTTTS contract represents a significant leap forward in our efforts to cultivate a highly skilled and adaptable force. By harnessing an adaptable and modern training architecture, we are empowering our service members to excel in their respective fields and meet the evolving challenges of modern warfare," LTCOL Soper explained.

The JTTTS draws from a network of training organisations from around the nation, including:

  • SW Metro TAFE in Western Australia
  • Charles Darwin University in the Northern Territory
  • TAFE Queensland
  • TAFE NSW
  • The University of New England
  • Kinetic IT
  • Wodonga TAFE

Chief JTTTS Officer Adam Jacoby said, “Bringing together some of the largest and most respected training institutions in the country in a collaborative and innovative national delivery model will reshape the Defence training ecosystem and be more responsive to the ADF’s short- and longer-term strategic objectives.”

JTTTS will deliver capability through nationally accredited and non-accredited technical training pathways to achieve Certificate II, III, IV and advanced trade qualifications in construction, electrical, electronics, engineering, mechanical, and from January 2025, aviation maintenance management (mechanical/avionics).
