Seizing the decision advantage: US DOD reaffirms AI vision

Ensuring that commanders are able to make split-second decisions with a complete picture of the battlespace remains the US Department of Defense’s priority for artificial intelligence, enabling the US military to achieve decision superiority on the future battlefield.

Ensuring that commanders are able to make split-second decisions with a complete picture of the battlespace remains the US Department of Defense’s priority for artificial intelligence, enabling the US military to achieve decision superiority on the future battlefield.

The comments were made by Craig Martell, chief digital and artificial intelligence officer for the Department of Defense at Advantage DOD 2024: Defense Data and AI Symposium, hosted by the chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office.

According to Martell, AI will provide an up-to-date and holistic picture of the battlefield synthesised from a broad array of data points.

“Imagine a world where combatant commanders can see everything they need to see to make strategic decisions,” Martell said as reported by The Pentagon.

“Imagine a world where those combatant commanders aren’t getting that information via PowerPoint or via emails from across the [organisation] – the turnaround time for situational awareness shrinks from a day or two to 10 minutes.”

The address followed recommendations made by the DOD in November to embrace the use of artificial intelligence which included five core precepts:

  • Superior battlespace awareness and understanding
  • Adaptive force planning and application
  • Fast, precise, and resilient kill chains
  • Resilient sustainment support
  • Efficient enterprise business operations

The recommendations are expected to facilitate the rapid transference of AI capabilities into the hands of the warfighter.

He described to attendees what the successful implementation of AI on the battlefield will look like.

“Winning for us is when everyone else thinks ’I launched AI; I solved this data problem. I quickly leveraged data to build an analytical solution that solved my commander’s problem right away, and I have the tools, I have the infrastructure, I have the policies and I have the contract vehicles to deliver it.”

“That’s winning.”

The AI Adoption Strategy, released in November, also identified several objectives for Defense:
