US President Donald Trump has announced his intent to appoint the senior vice president for Lockheed Martin International as Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, the Pentagon’s number three job.

John Rood has over 20 years of experience in federal government, having served as acting under secretary of state for arms control and international security, assistant secretary of state for international security and nonproliferation under the George W. Bush administration and worked as a National Security Council special assistant to President Bush.
Rood has also previously worked at the Pentagon, serving as deputy assistant secretary of defense for forces policy from 2003 until 2005.
Rood's responsibilities at Lockheed Martin include developing and executing strategies to grow the business and managing marketing and government relation activities. Rood also had previous defence industry experience at Raytheon, where he served as vice president of US business development.
The position of Under Secretary of Defense for Policy has been vacant since the beginning of the Trump administration. Rood's appointment is subject to Senate confirmation.
