A live fire target system business has won the first NSW Defence Industries Award at the Premier’s NSW Export Awards 2017, beating out competition from an advanced composites manufacturer and an air and marine craft video systems provider.

Australian Target Systems (ATS) of Albury took out the honours over Bankstown's Quickstep Technologies and UAV Vision of Port Macquarie.
ATS provides full spectrum live fire training systems to the Australian Defence Force (ADF) with services including: design input, systems development, project management, installation, operations and maintenance services, technical advisory services regarding range management, policy formulation, and R&D.
The award comes just five years after ATS was acquired and was in decline.
In its submission to the export awards, the company said, at the time of acquisition, the business comprised nine employees, was focused on providing sub-contractor and basic maintenance services, had only one customer, had no end user engagement, no innovation, no meaningful Defence co-operation and no active business development.
The company said it has since enhanced the judicious lethality and survivability of the Australian solider in combat by understanding the complexities of the modern battlefield, applying hard won lessons from Iraq and Afghanistan and developing realistic and immersive training.
The Premier’s NSW Export Awards are led by the Export Council of Australia with support from the NSW government. The state’s export sector generates more than $81 billion in sales of goods and services to world markets each year.
