EOS one step closer to export for high-energy weapons systems

Canberra-based Electro Optic Systems (EOS) has confirmed it is one step closer to securing export sales for the company’s high-energy laser weapons for two unidentified international customers.

Canberra-based Electro Optic Systems (EOS) has confirmed it is one step closer to securing export sales for the company’s high-energy laser weapons for two unidentified international customers.

Initially reported by Janes, the Australian company is currently negotiating the sale of 50–100 kilowatt high-energy laser (HEL) weapon system as part of what EOS believes will be the first worldwide export sales of HEL systems of that power ranking.

Dr Andreas Schwer, EOS managing director, told Janes on 21 September, “Signing such an export contract would be a landmark for the international high-energy laser weapon industry as it would be the first-ever agreement of its kind at this power level.”

EOS’ HEL weapon has been developed as a component of the EOS Titanis counter-UAS system, with its primary mission to effectively disable UAS in Groups 1, 2, and 3, while also neutralising UAS sensors from extended ranges via the delivery of a high-powered laser drawing exceptional energy levels from 50–100 kilowatt, depending on the specific application requirements.

High-energy lasers in the 50–100-kilowatt range serve as the key “non-kinetic” countermeasure in response to growing proliferation of the a suite of advanced and commercial off-the-shelf UAS systems, rocket and mortar artillery by peer and near-peer adversaries.

The company claims that the weapon can be supplied with 100–500 “stowed engagements” or operated continuously from external electrical power; there is no limit to the ON time.

EOS has designed, manufactured and exported advanced technology systems for nearly 40 years. The Canberra-based company’s product range includes remote weapon systems, turrets, high-energy laser weapons, counter-drone systems, space intelligence and space control products and services, and satellite communications terminals.
