Western Australia has sought to boost its defence exports and create new jobs with the launch of the first WA Defence Industry Capability Directory.

Western Australia has sought to boost its defence exports and create new jobs with the launch of the first WA Defence Industry Capability Directory.

WA's Defence Issues Minister Paul Papalia will today launch the inaugural directory, which contains over 100 local companies and will be used to promote WA's defence industry in Australia and overseas.

The directory was formed from the defence industry capability assessment undertaken by TCF Services, on behalf of Defence West.

The capability assessment, which was open to local industry from late 2017 until March 2018, asked businesses to examine their capabilities and assess them against the six capability streams of the Defence Integrated Investment Program.

The companies included in this inaugural directory, the majority of which are small to medium size enterprises, were considered to most closely match the immediate requirements of the Defence Integrated Investment Program.

Minister Papalia said the directory will be used by some of the state's strongest defence advocates.

"I am proud to launch the inaugural WA Defence Industry Capability Directory, which will be a powerful tool in promoting the state’s extensive defence capabilities," Minister Papalia said.

"The directory will be used by the WA Defence Advocate Rear Admiral (Ret'd) Raydon Gates AO CSM and Defence West to promote WA defence industry to key decision makers.

"The directory will also be provided to the WA government international offices for promotion to a range of international markets with a view to increasing the state’s defence exports."

The directory also includes capability information of all four Team WA universities – the University of Western Australia, Curtin University, Murdoch University and Edith Cowan University – as well as South Metropolitan TAFE. Defence West will continue this capability assessment work and the directory will be expanded on a regular basis to include more of the state’s companies.
