The survey provides you with an opportunity to help the Department of Defence to better understand the skilling, recruitment and training issues faced by the defence industry.
Defence is asking you to contribute to an online defence industry skilling survey. The information you provide will be used to develop a Defence Industry Skilling and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Strategy to support defence industry skills and workforce needs.
The Defence Industry Skilling and STEM Strategy will identify the priorities for workforce capacity and skills support, drawing on the information gathered in this survey. The strategy is an important component in the implementation of the government’s 2018 Defence Industrial Capability Plan, released on 23 April 2018.
Providing feedback to this anonymous survey will help ensure that a robust and successful Defence Industry Skilling and STEM Strategy is developed.
This strategy aims to help build an appropriately skilled Australian workforce pool in the near-to-medium future. A skilled and accessible Australian work force is essential for ensuring that Australian businesses are able to participate in contracts to support the $200 billion worth of investment in defence capability as outlined in the 2016 Defence White Paper.
Stephen Hayes, former CEO of the International Centre for Complex Project Management, will assist Defence in identifying and assessing defence industry skills issues across government, industry and the education sector to achieve stronger collaboration and to support defence industry workforce needs.
The growing importance of specialist STEM skills and/or experience required in the defence industry can take time to develop above the training and experience required in other industries. This means that there is some uncertainty over the size and make-up of the defence industry workforce and the workforce capacity within broader Australian industry to help meet Defence’s capability needs.
Data accumulated by the survey will help government and Defence to better understand the issues faced by defence industry and the workforce capacity within the defence industry.
The survey is open to Australian businesses, individuals, education institutions, government agencies and industry associations. The survey is anonymous and participation is entirely voluntary.
All responses are confidential and data will be reported in a de-identified and aggregated form solely used to assist with the development of the strategy.
The survey will be open until Friday 17 August 2018 and should take about 30 minutes to complete.
