The Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) welcomed thousands of prospective trainee officers, their families and friends, and members of the local community to its annual open day over the weekend.

As Australia’s joint military training institution, ADFA opens its doors each year on the last Saturday in August to give the public an opportunity to learn about life and study at the academy.

The Commandant of ADFA, Brigadier Cheryl Pearce, said the academy was an excellent pathway for those considering a military career.

"ADFA prepares future leaders of the Australian Defence Force by combining military training with a world-class university education from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Canberra," BRIG Pearce said.

In addition to learning about the unique leadership and military training opportunities on offer at the academy, the open day is an occasion to learn more about the array of undergraduate and postgraduate university degrees offered through UNSW Canberra.

Professor Michael Frater, rector of UNSW Canberra, said the quality of programs and excellence in research and teaching ensure UNSW Canberra graduates are highly sought after.

"UNSW Canberra continues to grow its degree streams and facilities to ensure the Australian Defence Force’s future leaders and Defence members are at the forefront of military and technological advancement, including the recent addition of a state-of-the-art cyber facility to meet the demand in this capability," he said.

The Royal Australian Navy, Australian Army and Royal Australian Air Force used the open day to showcase their capability and career opportunities within the ADF.

There were demonstrations by Navy clearance divers, helicopters, the Army Parachute Display Team military vehicle displays, as well as spectacular aerobatics from a RAAF Roulette, and the ever-popular military aircraft fly pasts.
