Government launches Cyber Security Industry Roadmap

The federal government has launched the Cyber Security Industry Roadmap, in an early step to help make Australia a world leader in cyber security.

The launch was one of two landmark reports introduced by Minister for Industry, Science and Technology Karen Andrews, alongside the Australian Cyber Security Growth Network’s (AustCyber’s) Sector Competitiveness Plan annual update.

“The roadmap investigates how cyber security can enable our technology growth industries to seize business opportunities, and what actions and research priorities we will need to better take advantage of this burgeoning industry and the jobs it will generate for many Australians,” Minister Andrews said.

The global cyber security market is anticipated to be worth US$250 billion within eight years and the government said it is "committed to ensuring we can build our cyber security capacity to make Australia a global leader in the field, with all the economic benefits that this will bring".

Australia's revenue from cyber security could triple over the next decade, according to the AustCyber plan.

The views of the cyber security industry have been incorporated in the AustCyber plan, as well as the views of universities and government experts.

These views all confirmed that improving cyber skills and education pathways are critical to expanding the cyber security sector in Australia.

“This is about building an industry that creates jobs and opportunity for Australians both now and into the long-term future,” Minister Andrews said.

The government launched two new tertiary qualifications earlier in 2018, and are focused on creating more skills-based cyber security professionals.

As part of the AustCyber plan, 18,000 more cyber security workers will be employed by 2026.
