Lockheed Martin and Universal Synaptics Corporation have signed an agreement to help the US Department of Defense counter a technological issue that could affect F/A-18 and F-35 aircraft, both of which are used by the Royal Australian Air Force.

A new automated testing technology, developed by Universal Synaptics, aims to tackle the issue known as intermittent fault anomaly, which currently costs the DoD $2 billion annually in maintenance costs.
The technology is called Intermittent Fault Detection, which discovers random fault anomalies in multi-domain platform electronics as well as wiring harnesses.
This next-generation system detects faults in nearly any piece of electronic equipment or wiring on any platform including F-35 and F/A-18, both of which are in service for the RAAF.
“This new capability is groundbreaking, and we’re tremendously excited to help the DoD address a challenge costing them billions,” said Laura Frank, vice president of Lockheed Martin Enterprise Sustainment Solutions.
“Resolving intermittence in electronics is a discriminator for the DoD in achieving an 80 per cent mission capable rate across platforms.”
The system eliminated unnecessary follow-on maintenance and proactively addresses emerging issues. The capability isolates each fault and provides maintenance actions to return the unit back into service.

Lockheed Martin and Universal Synaptics will provide solutions for the DoD with the Intermittent Fault Detection and Isolation System 2.0, the Voyager Intermittent Fault Detector and the associated interface and application solutions.
