The UK Ministry of Defence has awarded Babcock International with a configuration management contract for the Royal Navy and the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) surface ship fleet.

Babcock will take responsibility for the RN's Surface Ship Definition Database (SSDD) under the terms of the four-year agreement, as well as the operation of the Master Record Data Centre (Ships) (MRDC[SHIPS]), which is the "core facility for ship information configuration services", which Babcock said will allow it to "deliver a holistic, efficient surface-ship management solution to the RN".
SSDD is a tool used for managing platform related data.
These solutions will be used on both existing programs and new builds, which includes the Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers, with Babcock planning on embedding and upgrading the existing data management systems to "aid through-life support programs".
“We have been working closely with the Royal Navy and UK Ministry of Defence to support its critical assets for decades and we look forward to continuing this strong relationship,” said Simon Knight, naval engineering director of Babcock.
Babcock's work on the MRDC (Ships) will "contribute to ensuring that the necessary systems and equipment – including the associated maintenance and spares information – are available when and where they are required to meet RN and RFA demand, globally", according to the company.
“This contract demonstrates the critical relationship between data management, configuration management and operational platform availability," said David Ruff, Babcock Australia and New Zealand CEO.
"It also confirms the confidence that the world’s leading navies have in Babcock’s digitally-enabled asset management capabilities; now being deployed increasingly across Australia’s defence and emergency services sectors.”
