As the nature of defence platforms grow more and more complex and integrated, the need to successfully, rapidly and reliably absorb, analyse and disseminate data throughout multi-domain platforms and systems is becoming increasingly critical.
Key to this vision is AIR 6500, a joint battle management system that will interconnect the many disparate platforms, systems and sensors across the air, land space, electromagnetic and cyber domains into a collaborative environment that provides shared situational awareness of the battlespace and the ability to rapidly plan responses to threats.
As part of the rapidly developing project profile, Defence Connect drew together thought and industry leaders to discuss the future of Australia's 'networked' and 'joint' force doctrines, the technologies and the capabilities that would enable the ADF to continue to promote and defend the nation and its interests into the future.
The program has drawn together individual companies including Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, Boeing and Raytheon to develop and implement a multi-domain battle management (MDBM) and integrated air and missile defence system (IAMD) to enable the 'joint force' force structure, operating doctrine and concept.
As part of our coverage of the 2019 Avalon Airshow and Expo, Defence Connect in partnership with Northrop Grumman hosted a series of panel discussions unpacking the role of next-generation platforms, like the Triton and yet-to-be-selected Reaper-variant RPAS system, will deliver to the ADF as part of the transition to a 'joint force'.
Live Stream 1: Networking the ADF in the Multi-Domain Future
In the first-ever Defence Connect webcast, our panel of international specialists will discuss the implications of introducing multi-domain battle management capabilities. The panel will discuss a number of questions, including:
- What is driving the global focus on multi-domain operations?
- How should the ADF, and the RAAF in particular address the challenges of fourth and fifth-generation connectivity and interoperability?
- What near and longer-term capability developments are going to impact connectivity and interoperability the most?

Live Stream 2: Autonomous Systems in a 5th-Generation RAAF
In the second of our series of webcasts, the panel of specialists will consider the impact of introducing a range of autonomous aerial systems with the ADF. With a special focus on the Triton high-altitude, long-endurance UAS among others.
The panel will also address the implications of UAS capabilities across key areas, including:
- Impact of UAS on RAAF CONOPS, including coalition operations.
- The implications and opportunities for Australian industry of emergent autonomous technologies used in Australia and abroad.
