Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Darren Chester has revealed that more than $245,000 in funding will be provided to nine different projects as part of the Saluting Their Service Major Commemorative Grants program.

Minister Chester said the funding would "contribute to Australia’s understanding of its wartime heritage and honour the service and sacrifice of its service men and women".
“I congratulate the successful applicants on their commitment to recognising and remembering Australian military service,” Minister Chester said.
“I know they will use this funding to deliver meaningful projects and engage communities across the country."
The successful applications are listed below:
- Barkley Regional Council (NT) - $39,600 - Erect a fence around Anzac Hill in Tennant Creek;
- Quilpie Shire Council (Qld) - $77,573 - Erect a memorial dedicated to soldiers who served and lost their lives in the Afghanistan War;
- The Corporation of the Trustees of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Brisbane (Qld) - $16,000 - Restore an honour roll commemorating the sacrifice of Catholic soldiers, sailors and nurses from Queensland in WWI;
- The Royal Australian Regiment Association Queensland Division (Qld) - $20,000 - Refurbish historical plinths at the RAR National Memorial Walk;
- Jamestown Development Association (SA) - $6,950 - Re-create the Digger’s Walk in Jamestown to honour the sacrifice and contribution of those from the district who served in the First World War;
- Vietnam Veterans Federation South Australian Branch (SA) - $14,500 - Re-paint iconic murals depicting Australia's Vietnam wartime heritage at the Vietnam Veterans Federation SA Branch's new offices in Marion, South Australia;
- St Helens - St Marys RSL Sub-Branch Inc (Tas) - $15,380 - Create a mural at St Helens Memorial Hall commemorating the service and sacrifice of Tasmanians during and after the First World War;
- Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia Geelong and District Sub-Branch (Vic) - $20,000 - Upgrade the Vietnam Veterans Avenue of Honour and Memorial Park in North Geelong, Victoria; and
- Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia WA Branch (WA) - $37,410 - Record a series of video interviews, 'Camaraderie Generations', with a cross-section of veterans covering the period from the Second World War to post-1975 Peacekeeping and Peacemaking operations.
"Moving forward from the First World War Centenary period, it’s encouraging to see organisations commemorate more recent conflicts, such as the Quilpie Shire Council, which will construct a memorial dedicated to those soldiers who served and lost their lives in Afghanistan," said Minister Chester.
“The Western Australian branch of the Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia plans to capture an important slice of history in video interviews with a cross-section of veterans all the way from the Second World War up to peacekeeping operations post-1975.
“I look forward to seeing these projects come to fruition, and encourage other groups in the broader Australian community, looking to commemorate our service personnel, to review the grant guidelines and submit an application.”
