Northrop Grumman delivers eight EW simulators for US Air Force

Northrop Grumman has received a US$46 million delivery order for eight Joint Threat Emitter (JTE) Units. This award is a part of the indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity JTE Enhanced Delivery Initiative for the US Air Force.

Northrop Grumman has received a US$46 million delivery order for eight Joint Threat Emitter (JTE) Units. This award is a part of the indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity JTE Enhanced Delivery Initiative for the US Air Force.

JTE is a mobile air defence electronic warfare threat simulator that provides high-fidelity replication of surface-to-air missiles and anti-aircraft artillery threats for aircrew training.

James Conroy, vice president, land and avionics C4ISR at Northrop Grumman, said, "JTE is critical to the success of the US military and our international allies. The system ensures aircrews are better equipped to identify and effectively counter the most advanced enemy missile and artillery threats."

Awarded by the Air Force Life Cycle Management Centre, this award includes the delivery of eight wide-band variants of the threat emitter unit, as well as retrofit kits for some existing systems. Deliveries are slated for US training ranges across the country and to select international locations.

This will mark the second set of JTE systems delivered internationally. All work under this contract will be performed in Buffalo.

The JTE Enhanced Delivery Initiative contract includes threat emitter units, mobile and fixed command and control units, support equipment, testing and training.

JTE can be relocated easily, and is reactive to aircrew/aircraft for defence measures, and can be rapidly reprogrammed with new threat parameters.

Northrop Grumman's full list of capabilities for the JTE is as follows:

  • Capability to train as you fight;
  • Multi-threat training from a single system;
  • Fully integrated IADS command and control emulation;
  • Reactivity to aircraft manoeuvres and ECM;
  • Complete debriefing capability;
  • IFF tracking system (multi-player);
  • Superior reliability and capability;
  • Integrated logistical support; and
  • Spiral upgrade capability.

The JTE offers 'true' warfighter training for the combat aircrews and provides a modern, reactive battlespace war environment, designed to help train military personnel to identify and effectively counter enemy missile or artillery threats.

A multi-threat, high-fidelity simulator with realistic effective radiated power levels, the JTE simulates both single and double digit surface-to-air and anti-aircraft artillery radar systems and accurately trains combat aircrews to defeat or avoid integrated air defence systems around the world in a war-like training environment.

Northrop Grumman’s JTE is the current US Air Force program of record with 30 systems fielded both domestically and internationally. The JTE provides a modern, reactive battlespace war environment, designed to help train military personnel to identify and effectively counter enemy missile or artillery threats.
