The Defence Family and Domestic Violence Strategy was launched yesterday by the Department of Defence and Minister for Defence Marise Payne.

The new strategy sets out the principles and strategies the department will use to support personnel and their families who are affected by family and domestic violence to create a more supportive and responsive workplace.

Minister Payne said there was increased recognition of the importance of both preventing violence and responding effectively when it occurs.

“Defence is actively engaged in the national response to reduce family and domestic violence and supporting those affected by this violence is a key priority,” Minister Payne said.

“The strategy aims to support initiatives that will promote awareness and enhance support services for all Defence personnel and their families affected by family and domestic violence.”

It sets out Defence’s objectives and key areas of focus and principles, including that family and domestic violence is never acceptable and that perpetrators will be held to account.

The strategy complements Defence’s Commanders and Managers Guide to Responding to Family and Domestic Violence.

Minister Payne said while family and domestic violence could have devastating and lifelong effects, all Defence personnel had a role to play and could make a difference.

“We will continue to work together to ensure Defence employees and their families have a safe and supportive environment in which to live and work,” Minister Payne said.

The Defence Family and Domestic Violence Strategy 2017–2022 is available on the Defence website: www.defence.gov.au.
