Australia’s strategic alliance with the US and Western Australia’s pivotal role in the fast-growing Indo-Pacific region will be discussed in Perth this week at the 27th annual Australian American Leadership Dialogue (AALD).
Last held in Perth in 2011, the AALD will include eminent leaders from Australian and US politics, business, media and tertiary institutions.
Minister Papalia said, "The Western Australian government welcomes delegates from across Australia and the US to this incredibly important dialogue. The long-term trade, cultural and defence relationship between the US and Australia has never been more important; the Perth AALD will help shape our future bilateral agreements and policy."
Participants include several members of the US Senate and House of Representatives; Commonwealth ministers; former head of the US National Security Agency, Admiral (Ret'd) Michael Rogers; Chief of the Royal Australian Navy, Vice Admiral Michael Noonan; Australian ambassador to the US Joe Hockey; US ambassador to Australia Arthur Culvahouse jnr; senior representation from Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM) and executives from strategically important enterprises such as Virgin Australia, Delta Airlines, BHP, ECU, Curtin University, Microsoft, Boeing, Chevron and Lockheed Martin Space.
AALD topics will include defence and security, trade, AI and robotics, space, cyber security, global energy supply chains, digital transformation and ethics in the digital age.
"Western Australia has a growing role to play in supporting a secure and vibrant Indo-Pacific region and the McGowan government is focused on growing our capacity to support the defence industry and fostering innovation," Minister Papalia added.
The AALD is a private diplomatic initiative, which brings together Australian and American leaders from government, enterprise, media, education and the community to help review and refine the parameters of the Australian-American bilateral relationship.
Mission: The mission of the AALD is to broaden and deepen mutual understanding between Australian and American leaders and to enhance the framework for regional security in a manner that underwrites economic and cultural prosperity for Australian and American citizens. By doing so, both nations are able to contribute to the development of a robust, stable and economically healthy world.
Values: The AALD was founded, and continues to run, based on principles of bilateral interest, bipartisanship, voluntarism and leadership in the service of others, frank exchange, intergenerational perspectives, mutual tolerance and personal courtesy.
Action orientation: Since 1992, leaders have gathered at AALD programs in various cities across the two nations to shape the direction of the bilateral relationship. These programs allow a rich and ongoing dialogue to develop across seven key themes: economics and trade, security and defence, foreign policy, domestic politics, innovation and technology, energy and climate and education, health and social inclusion.
The bilateral and bipartisan nature of the Leadership Dialogue facilitates the pragmatic and free-flowing exchange of ideas that has become a hallmark of the events. The high calibre of discussion and debate leads to the formation of support for strategic policy in both countries.
"I look forward to participating in the 2019 AALD program and hearing the views of the US and Australian delegates visiting Perth," Minister Papalia said.
