The Australian Defence Force Academy has held its 27th annual Open Day, with prospective trainee officers given the chance to see the opportunities the ADF has to offer.

Prospective trainees, family, friends and the local community were all on hand to discover what life and study at the academy is like and view displays by the Navy, Army and Air Force.

Commandant of ADFA, Commodore Peter Leavy, noted that ADFA played a vital role in preparing future leaders of the Australian Defence Force by combining military training with a world-class university education from UNSW Canberra.

“ADFA Open Day is an opportunity for prospective applicants and their families to have all their questions answered about life at the academy and gain an understanding of the military training and academic programs on offer,” CDRE Leavy said.

In addition to information about the unique leadership and military training available at the academy, UNSW Canberra provided details on the undergraduate programs on offer.

Professor Michael Frater, rector of UNSW Canberra said the institution provided world-class education to the future leaders of the ADF for more than half a century.

“We are preparing students for jobs of the future, some of which don’t even exist yet. We provide quality teaching and are driven by research, making UNSW Canberra an outstanding and unique place to study,” Professor Frater said.

ADFA’s midshipmen and officer cadets can undertake an undergraduate degree in arts, science, business, engineering or cyber security through UNSW Canberra, along with a comprehensive military program to prepare them as officers in the Navy, Army and Air Force.

Displays included Navy clearance divers and helicopters, the Army Parachute Display Team, and military vehicle displays, as well as aerobatics from an Air Force Roulette and military aircraft flyovers.
