Raytheon Australia managing director Michael Ward has been named this year’s Australian HR Champion (CEO) of the Year at the 2019 Australian HR Awards ceremony held in Sydney.

Ward, responsible for the executive management of Raytheon operations in Australia and New Zealand, was formerly employed as a defence adviser to the Parliament of Australia.
“This achievement is a testament to the long-standing investment that Michael has made in continually developing our workforce,” said Raytheon Australia head of HR Janette Coulton.
“Through his focus on leadership, the ongoing professionalisation of the HR function, and the implementation of innovative people initiatives, Michael has created a culture that is truly strategy-led and values based.”
Prior to assuming the role of managing director, Ward served as Raytheon Australia’s general manager, strategy and business development, where he was responsible for business growth and operational efficiency. He has also previously served as the company’s chief operating officer and general manager, technical services.
During Ward’s tenure with the company, Raytheon Australia has implemented policies that support parents, veterans and carers while also leading the way to close the gender pay gap through progressive HR initiatives.

“Underpinning these cultural values is our ability to provide career growth and leadership development opportunities for our workforce.”
To provide employees with ongoing growth opportunities, the company has a unique professional development program known as the Leadership Continuum, which was also recognised as a finalist in the 2019 HR Awards.
“Since 2010, more than 650 employees have advanced through our Leadership Continuum, with many graduates being promoted to more senior roles within the company,” said Coulton.
“However, we recognise that there is more to be done in order to create a workforce culture capable of housing five generations. Michael and I have again partnered to craft the next-generation of HR initiatives, which we look forward to unveiling this year – focused on growing our people and attracting the very best future workforce.”
