Australian businesses recognise the value of hiring ex-service personnel, with 129 nominations received for the 2020 Prime Minister’s Veterans’ Employment Awards.

Minister for Veterans and Defence Personnel Darren Chester said the awards recognised and celebrated veterans in the workforce, and acknowledge organisations focused on investing and supporting veterans as they transition to civilian life, and their families.
“We invest heavily in training our ADF personnel, providing them with qualities and capabilities that are valued by civilian employers – leadership, teamwork and a strong sense of mission and purpose are all qualities employers can expect,” Minister Chester said.
“The extensive range of skills, abilities, behaviours and attributes veterans gain make them an asset to any workplace and it’s great to see organisations recognising this, and promoting it as part of their workplace culture.
“This is the third year of the awards and we have seen a rise in the number of nominations from previous years, which shows employers are proud of their veteran staff and highlights that businesses are promoting that hiring a veteran is good for business.”
The awards are a feature of the Prime Minister’s Veterans’ Employment Program, which aims to support veterans' employment and build an understanding in the wider community of the valuable skills that Australian Defence Force members bring to the workforce.
“Veterans and businesses are supported by resources available on the re-launched Veterans’ Employment website, which includes a new toolkit to assist ADF personnel transitioning to civilian employment, and tips for businesses looking to hire them,” Minister Chester said.
“The toolkit explains how a veterans’ unique skills translate to the civilian workplace, how best to plan for transition, how to apply for jobs, and provides tips for adjusting to a civilian workplace.”
