DARPA’s Microsystems Technology Office (MTO) is seeking new high-technology proposals, according to the Melbourne-based Defence Science Institute. The MTO seeks to develop high-risk, high-reward technologies for US national security.

As it evolves to address future microsystem-related challenges, the office has identified four critical areas of technology and innovation. Applications are sought from companies and researchers with proposals to address:
- Embedded microsystem intelligence and localised processing;
- Next generation front-end component technologies for electromagnetic (EM) spectrum dominance;
- Microsystem integration for increased functional density and security; and
- Disruptive defence microsystem applications.
Each of these overlapping spaces presents significant opportunities for exploring new and creative technologies, says DARPA. Proposed research should investigate approaches that enable revolutionary advances in sciences, devices or systems. Specifically excluded is research that primarily results in evolutionary improvements to the existing state of practice.
The MTO is part of DARPA’s mission of creating and preventing strategic surprise, helping to secure the US Department of Defense’s technological superiority and addressing the complex threats facing US national security.
Austrade is eager to explore how it can support an Australian organisation’s application, so any Australian companies or research teams that are interested in pursuing this opportunity should contact the Defence Science Institute in the first instance.
