Navantia Australia was recently awarded Occupational Health and Safety Certification (International Standard 45001) and Environmental Certification (International Standard 14001) by an independent Norwegian auditor.

The certification comes after two years of system development and refinement, and has been made out by by Det Norske Veritas (DVN GL), a Norwegian registrar and classification society.

Alfonso Garcia-Valdes, Navantia Australia's managing director, said that gaining this certification gives confidence to the company’s customers, employees and the wider community.

“Navantia Australia has always taken very seriously workers’ health and safety and the environment, the ISO certification of both our systems is a huge step forward for the company and takes our understanding and commitment to the next level. I want to thank the Navantia Australia crew for their dedication to our certification efforts and most importantly maintaining a safe, healthy and environmentally sound workplace,” he said.

The ISO certification confers a host of other benefits, including the ability to trade globally and comply with health, safety and the environmental legal obligations in any country.

Navantia Australia currently provides engineering platform systems design and integration services to three classes of ships in service with the Royal Australian Navy and will be the prime contractor in supporting the sustainment of the new Supply Class replenishment vessels. The two Australian ships are based on the Spanish Navy's Cantabria Class auxiliary oiler replenishment (AOR) ships.

Navantia’s partnership with the Royal Australian Navy began with the contracts to design the Hobart Class guided missile destroyers and continued with the design and co-manufacture of the Canberra Class landing helicopter docks, the design and construction of 12 LHD landing craft, and the design, build and sustainment of the new Supply Class AORs.

Established in 2012, Navantia Australia currently delivers platform system design and integration services for all classes of Navantia-designed vessels. The company maintains offices in four Australian capital cities (Canberra, Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne), and has plans to establish a sustainment centre in Perth.
