Some of you may be searching whether importanter is a word, whilst others are concerned that the original phrase suggested math is importanter, not people. Words alone cannot attract and retain interest. It requires people - good people that can relate to the audience and craft the intended message.
Celebrating 13 years of successful business in May 2020, Horsell is an Australian, veteran and family owned and operated Defence SME. The company was founded with a clear mission - “to solve problems and deliver solutions for our customers” and a clear vision – “make complex simple”. Having survived the GFC of 2008, Defence budget cuts to record lows in 2012-13 and now the COVID-19 pandemic, the company is rightly proud of not only how it has survived but how it has thrived.
Horsell provides ‘above and below the line’ professional services in tender development and bid responses specialising in the Australian Standard for Defence Contracting suite of tendering and contracting templates used by Defence. A diverse team of project managers and support personnel, technical writers, editors and desktop publishers, business analysts and functional specialists across integrated logistics support and commercial/procurement domains work with their clients to make the complex simple.
Drew recalls a social gathering in the company’s early days where the consensus seemed to be that money made a business successful. Drew agreed until his father challenged him, saying it was people that make the success. “I didn’t agree with it at the time - for me it was all about remaining viable with profit driving much of the decision making, but it became clear that our staff represented our family name as well as our company values so we needed to make people our highest priority,” Drew said.
Today, Horsell’s family culture is well regarded not only by its staff but also by clients and colleagues alike and the foundations of the company’s success is that its people are its best asset.
In addition to its full-time team, Horsell has a wider support network comprising a pool of specialist casual employees and further access to a workforce of more than a hundred hand selected individuals and companies. All recruiting is conducted inhouse and they find word of mouth is the best referee. Staff are recruited not just for their skills but shared values.
Diversity is a strength and an ongoing goal. Horsell’s workforce is 65% female, 30% military veterans and more than 50% working from and/or supporting regional Australia in flexible workplace arrangements. In celebrating International Women’s Day earlier this year, Drew said, “Equality is not a women's issue, it's a business issue. Women have been our mothers, partners, friends, mentors, and some of our best staff that have helped us achieve so much in the past 13 years of business. Let’s celebrate them!”
Publication Management Services are a key part of Horsell’s offering. The company is expert in managing the development, production, authoring and illustration of a wide range of products including technical publications, project and functional plans, requests for tenders and tender responses, and developing military doctrine as the fundamental set of principles that guides a defence force.
Horsell is Defence Industry Security Program accredited and is a member of the Defence Support Services Panel providing 13 different skill sets up to Level 4 and providing support to several Major Service Providers and industry partners.
While working remotely or from home has become the new model for many, Horsell and its staff have been doing it for 13 years and only recently did they see a need to open a physical office. Their modern new headquarters at 1.04/175 Sturt Street, Southbank Victoria is only a few hundred metres from Victoria Barracks Melbourne and offers easy access from the Melbourne CBD and suburbs. From there, staff can provide increased responsiveness to their clients including many of the Land Systems programs they support within CASG.
