In her day-to-day life, Air Force Sergeant Carly Formosa patrols the northern suburbs of Adelaide as a First Class Constable with the South Australia Police. However, as a reservist, she has been deployed on Operation Accordion as an operations sergeant for the past six months.

SGT Formosa is deployed to the Joint Operations Rooms in the Middle East, as part of Joint Task Force 633. Her responsibilities include providing immediate support to key staff in order to co-ordinate daily activities.
She said the deployment has been a "great experience", and adds that she is "learning the intricacies of the other services". She also added that the deployment had exposed her to plenty of experiences relevant to her police role, stating that this is one of the benefits of being a reservist.
Coming from a military family, her fascination with Defence started as a child.
“I remember seeing my Dad, Eric, a former Air Force sergeant, in his mess uniform,” SGT Formosa said.
“I knew at a young age I wanted to be part of the sergeants mess and wear a military uniform, like he did.”
SGT Formosa said that involvement with the ADF is not limited to herself and her father – her two brothers and husband also serve.
“Mark is in the Air Force as a non-destructive inspector and Trevor is in the Army as a rifleman,” she said.
“My husband and I met whilst both posted to RAAF Base Edinburgh.”
Deployed overseas during the coronavirus pandemic, Formosa said that being apart from her family during this difficult time had made the assignment challenging.
“I am looking forward to returning home and getting a big hug from my two boys, Seth and William,” SGT Formosa said.
